Prior to enlisting in the Army, Pat Tillman would often ride his bike to the Irish pub Rúla Búla in Tempe, sit in the dining room to relax and study his Cardinals playbook over a pint of Guinness. One day, he brought his own Imperial 20-oz Guinness pint glass to the pub engraved with his ASU jersey #42. He asked the bartender to keep the glass behind the bar where it was stored on the top shelf so it could easily be located when he stopped by for a pint.
After 9/11, Pat made the decision to leave behind his NFL football career and join the Army Rangers. Prior to deploying, he stopped by for a pint and rather than take his #42 glass with him he asked the bartender to keep it on the shelf for when he returned.
Ten years after his tragic death in Afghanistan, Pat’s pint glass remains on the shelf of Rúla Búla’s backbar.
A CELEBRATION OF PAT'S LEGACY
From Tempe to New York City, Pints for Pat is now a family and community tradition in honor of Pat.
On November 12th, join us for Pints for Pat at Fadó Irish Pub in Chicago to celebrate the Tillman Scholars who are carrying on Pat's legacy of leadership and service. The night will feature light Irish fare, drinks, a premier raffle, silent auction and custom-engraved Guinness glasses for all participants. Proceeds support the Tillman Scholars program which invests in military veterans and their spouses through academic scholarships, building a diverse community of leaders in the fields of medicine, business, law, technology, education and the arts.
